Andy Wilson’s Under Our Skin, a documentary that investigates the silent epidemic of Lyme disease, gives urbanites another reason to stay the hell

away from nature and thank their lucky stars for their brick and mortar homes. But before you go hug a brownstone, viewer beware: You still can catch the bug. With an estimated 200,000 cases every year, the disease is infectious and ten times more prevalent than AIDS. Like every other major industry in America, we sadly learn the ways in which the medical and science world are screwing us over for a buck. Alas, another sordid tale drowning in a cesspool of politics and controversy–in this case, greedy doctors and researchers who are in cahoots with pharmaceutical companies. Health reform anyone?

Aside from scaring the bejesus out of us with shaky, bedridden patients with slurred speech and disheartening stories of chronic pain and infinite medical misdiagnoses, the film also features the war between the “goodies” and the “baddies” of Doctordom, as well as new research that possibly connects Lyme disease to Alzeheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS.

So if you’re in the mood to learn about yet another health crisis and that we’re to blame for its spread, be sure to check out this doom-and-gloom doc. But you might not want to take your date out to this one.

Under Our Skin is screening at the IFC Center thru June 25th.
